Turn on batch tracking
Enable batch tracking in Business Settings. It is off by default, because most trades do not need it.
Enter the batch when stock arrives
On the purchase entry, record the batch number and its expiry date against the item.
Pick the batch when you sell
The batch is selected on the invoice line, so the right stock is reduced and the sale is traceable to that batch.
Watch the expiry report
The batch report flags anything expiring within 30 days as Expiring Soon, and anything past its date as Expired.
Example
A pharmacy receives 50 strips of a medicine in batch B-2291 expiring in March. Sell 30 and the batch shows 20 left. Once it is inside 30 days of expiry it appears as Expiring Soon, so it can be sold down or returned before it becomes dead stock.
